Kate Hamburger: The Logic of Literature

Käte Hamburger in her epoch-making work "The Logic of Literature" (Die Logika der Dichtung, 1957) posits a fundamental theory of literary genres based on language as a structure, and not on mere aesthetic form. Her key thesis is that all literature is divided into two basic, mutually exclusive modes: fictional (epic and drama) and existential/real (lyric).

Fictional mode (Epic and Drama): Hamburger claims that fiction is not a "lie", but the creation of an independent semblance of reality. In epics and dramas, the real author does not speak, but a fictitious narrative field is established within which the characters act as independent subjects.
Asymmetry of the third person: Narrative "he" or "she" in fiction does not function the same as in real life. The reader gets a direct insight into the character's inner world (thoughts, feelings, subconscious), which is impossible in reality. This proves that the epic subject is not a real person, but a fictional creation.
Loss of time dimension: The past tense in fiction (epic preterite) loses its past function. When we read "Yesterday He Sat in the Room," that "yesterday" becomes the present for the reader within the world of the story. Fiction thus erases the border between the past and the present.
Lyric mode as reality: Unlike the epic, the lyric is not fiction for the author. The lyrical subject ("I" in the poem) is equated with the real expressive subject (the author himself). A lyric poem is a real linguistic act, an expression of real experience and existence, which is why lyrics logically belong to the real, not fictional mode.
