Summary
Vesna Kilibarda, Jelena Knežević: Njegoš's library In the seclusion of Cetinje, far from the centers of European spirituality and culture, Njegoš preferred to socialize with books: he read, learned languages, wrote poems. Information about what he read and what his education might have been, primarily literary, is mostly sought in the titles or contents of books from his library. The question of Njegoš's reading, given that he mostly gained knowledge through books, is of extreme importance for Njegoš's students. Njegoš's library, which also attracted the attention of some contemporary foreign visitors to Cetinje, was created in 1838 when Njegoš separated the secular books, which had been acquired by his predecessor, the experienced and educated Petar I, from the church ones and transferred them from the Cetinje monastery to his new residence in Biljarda.
