Vratović Vladimir

Summary

Vladimir Vratović: Essays on Croatian Literature in Latin Expression

The selection of articles in this book by university professor in peace Vladimir Vratović represents his continuous work and interest in the field of Croatian Latinism, or rather the creativity of Croatian authors in the Latin language, whether their subject matter is classical Greco-Roman, or Croatian and their European era, from the 15th to the 21st century. The articles were written and published between 1965 and 2005.

As prof. Vratović collected most of his articles written up to 1980 in the book Croatian Latinism and Roman Literature (studies, articles, evaluations), NZMH, Zagreb, 1989. and arranged the material himself, this is to warn me that this selection of articles was intended and that I, as an editor, arranged it with the consent of the professor himself. In the aforementioned book, the material, which includes articles published between 1960 and 1980, is divided into four parts. In the first part, he talks about "the themes and writers of Croatian Latinism", in the second, literature is covered: "Croatian Latinist and Roman literature" examined in comparison, and "in part, Croatian Latinism in relation to the literature of folk expression and world neo-Latinism". The third part deals with topics "about Roman literature", while the fourth part has "two articles about humanistic education and classical high school".

The selection we have in our hands, as can be seen from the title, is intended as a selection of studies, articles and essays mainly on topics and writers of Croatian Latinism, reviews of periods of Croatian literature in the Latin language and topics of Croatian authors, learning Latin and Greek in secondary schools, about a prominent professor in Croatian high school system, prof. Bručić, the interest in the Latin language in the world and our modern times, and some spelling issues, related to the use of Latin phrases in the Croatian context, as well as the writing of some internationalisms in the Croatian language (Europe/Europe).

The material is divided into two parts, and then each part into two sections that I have marked with capital letters of the alphabet.

The first part includes nine articles, of which section A has six articles, and section B three. articles.

The second part comprises six articles, of which section A has three articles, as well as section B.

Article Europe or Europe? (Language, no. 1, 1983) the author added several texts by other authors that were created on the occasion of his article as a reaction, either affirmative or negative. These are articles by Ratimir Kalmeta, Mila Mamić and Milan Popović, an article in Belgrade's Politica signed with the initials B.R., and a short editorial note in Vjesnik J.P. (=Josip Pavičić) in the Kiosk časopis section in which he presents the magazine Jezik, no. 4, 1984, "in which Milenko Popović replies to Vladimir Vratović" on the article "Europa or Europe", and transmits the article as a whole.

The articles were originally transmitted from magazines and newspapers when they were first published with proofreading corrections by the author himself. In some cases, for the sake of clarity, I have marked the titles of the works in italics in the text, as was done in the mentioned book from 1989, even though it was not originally done this way in the magazine.

I hope that this selection of articles will be useful to everyone who is interested in Croatian literature of Latin expression and that it will broaden the horizons of every reader who encounters the texts of prof. Vratović and the horizons through which Croatian literature is spread. It will be especially enlightening to all those who in their education were deprived of getting to know the Croatian rootedness of Croats and Croatian art in general, and here, especially highlighted, literature in European streams continuously through the centuries since we can follow the written word of Croatian authors.

Therefore, I recommend this book to everyone from the upper grades of elementary school, through high school students, students, professors and citizens of all professions, because in it they will find incentives for thinking and conscious action of Croatian literary, artistic and political activity. and permeation within Europes who, and thus the world's creativity. We have nothing to be ashamed of, but by looking at the work of our ancestors, we can contribute to a more beautiful and better world on this earthly whirlwind. Professors of classical philology contributed to such an understanding of our cultural history, and among them Prof. Vladimir Vratović.
