Ivo Andrić one European life

Based on the author's archival research, the book Fire in fire by Michael Martens (1973) is the first complete biography of Ivo Andrić, a writer who was also a direct witness to key events in Yugoslav and European history in the 20th century. Trying to shed light on various extra-literary phenomena, which persistently appear as starting points in the interpretations of Andrić's work, and which concern national-cultural and socio-political circumstances, both in the era when it was created and today, Martens pays the most attention to the reconstruction of the period of Andrić's diplomatic service in Berlin before the Second World War and the local and wider European political circumstances in which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1961, narratively connecting these two episodes that are distant in time and disparate in meaning into a meaningful - although by no means final, nor the only possible - interpretive construction.

To those readers whose mother tongues are also the language of Andrić's literature, Martens does not seem like a stranger to the colonial perspective, who simplifies, simplifies or misunderstands the greatest literature of their world. and disagree with him, the reason will never be that Martens doesn't understand something. And that, in fact, is the greatest compliment that can be given to this precious book."

We don't know what was the motive of Michael Martens to take five or six years of his life to write this book. Perhaps he wanted to use it to repay Andrić the debt for the pleasures he gave him as a reader. Perhaps he was attracted by an unusual biography that was just waiting for the right author to shape it into a beautiful book. But in any case, Martens reaffirmed a truly European greatness that was born in an artist and art in extremely unfavorable times, precisely "in the conflagration of worlds".
