Summary
Jacob Burckhardt: Cicero
Introduction to enjoying the works of art of Italy
The author's intention was to provide an overview of the most important works of art in Italy, which would quickly give the passerby good information about the existing ones, the one who stays longer the necessary stylistic parallels and the basis for everyday local art history, and provide a pleasant memory for the person who was in Italy. Everything that is simply archaeological has been intentionally left out. In individual cases I have followed very different points of view; I have often provided only a note that provides an explanation, some historical note, and sometimes only the content and location; the description was a task for me only if it could serve as an indication of an important detail or to facilitate finding and learning about the objects in question; otherwise I counted only on the fact that the reader has seen or will see what it is about. I strove to clearly and completely define places, to the extent that the volume of the work allowed.
