Summary
Zvonko Maković: Nikola Reiser
Reiser Nikola, Croatian painter (Mirnovec near Samobor, October 14, 1918 – Zagreb, March 23, 2010). Studied 1939–43. at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb (V. Becić); graduated in 1963 (O. Postružnik). Attended the Académie Julian in Paris (1949–50). He was a professor at the Zagreb Academy (1969–83) and head of the Master's Workshop (1978–85). He was a regular member of HAZU since 1986. At first, under the influence of the French post-impressionists, especially the intimists P. Bonnard and E. J. Vuillard, he painted portraits (Portrait of Mrs. A. Georgijević, 1946; Blue Portrait, 1945) and landscapes (Krbavsko polje, 1947; Mirnovec, 1956). Most of the still life works with characteristic motifs of flowers and vases are lapidary expressions achieved with subtle coloristic means (Nature morte III, 1952; Blue vase, 1963; Rose with a blue line, 1979; White rose, 1992). In watercolors of erotic female nudes (Before the mirror, 1960; Woman with raised arms, 1992) and landscapes (Crikvenica, 1986; Shipyard V. Lošinj, 1992), a nostalgic atmosphere prevails, realized in restrained tones. He published several graphic maps (8 lithographs, 1958; Erotique, 2006, with lyrics by D. Tadijanović). He received the "Vladimir Nazor" Award for Lifetime Achievement (1998).
