Summary
Marijan Detoni: War Diary 1943
Sixty years after its creation and twenty years after the death of Marijan Detoni (1905-1981), this newly found, intriguing, intimate wartime diary of one of the leading Croatian graphic artists of the 20th century, a member of the Zemlja group and a longtime professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, is published. a drama about the humiliations of an intellectual and an artist in the crowd, a poignant story about the unknown fate of his own wife, and a precious document in which the author candidly and honestly portrays people and their fates, especially that of Vladimir Nazor.
It is astonishing that the author wrote his diary in a miniature calendar for the year 1943, where on the first pages there was a map of the Independent State of Croatia with a picture of Chief Ante Pavelić! A rarity is also the miniature, but clearly legible handwriting - the sign of an excellent graphic artist.
