Viktor Lazarev: Russian icon painting
From the beginning to the beginning of the 16th century Capital work of one of the world's most famous art historians. It covers the time period from the 11th century, when the oldest icons in Novgorod were created under Byzantine influence, through the works of Theophanes the Greek and Andrei Rublev, to the beginning of the 16th century and the icons of the Moscow school. In addition to the dating, aesthetic and technical analysis of the icons, the author explained in clear language the origin and activity of different schools of painting on Russian territory. V.N. Lazarev showed how after the fall of the Byzantine Empire, Russian painting, especially icon painting, assumed a leading role in the art of Orthodox Christianity and became their model. This work contains 260 color plates with reproductions of Russian icons.
