Summary
Željko Rapanić: Studies on the Early Middle Ages
This book publishes eighteen works by Prof. Rapanić from the field of history and art history of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages from the territory of the eastern Adriatic coast. Although the subject topics in the book are geographically relatively narrowly defined, the discussion about them goes far beyond these boundaries, because the problems posed and the way they are solved penetrate widely and deeply into the general European science that deals with these issues. Some of these works were already published a long time ago, but later researchers of these topics in many segments did not surpass them, so Rapanić's scientific achievements and especially the methodology of their achievement are still unsurpassed in our science.
The selection of texts that were printed in the book Studies on the Early Middle Ages perfectly depict this segment of Rapanić's work and once again confirm him as one of the most important, if not the most important, scientist who, from different points of view, is very thorough and objectively shed light on the pre-Romanesque Dalmatian artistic creativity and the related early medieval cultural landscape, which for a long time indebted Croatian culture in general. The value of the book is contributed by the final chapters (sources and literature, summaries in foreign languages, bibliographic note, index of personal names and place names), and the book is introduced by an extensive text by the editor and preface writer, Dr. Ivan Basić, a historian from the University of Split, who has already proven himself to be an excellent connoisseur of Ž. Rapanić, when he thoroughly evaluated his entire oeuvre and edited the bibliography for the collection Munuscula in honorem Željko Rapanić, on the occasion of Rapanić's eightieth birthday.
