Summary
Reynold A. Nicholson: Sufism - The Mystics of Islam
In this classic work, Dr. Nicholson, one of the greatest experts in the field of Islamic mysticism, opens the reader's way to a serious study of Islamic mysticism. Mr. Nicholson traces the contours of Sufism and the religious philosophy of Islam, describing certain principles, methods, and main features of the inner life characteristic of Muslims of all classes from the eighth century to the present day. In the book we have the opportunity to read many rare passages, mostly translated by the author himself from Arabic and Persian originals. "Sufism as the religious philosophy of Islam is described in the oldest known definition as 'the conception of divine reality'. Muhammadan mystics like to call themselves Ahl al-Haq, 'followers of the Real'." In an attempt to explain its main doctrines, Nicholson uses material on the history of Islamic mysticism collected over the past twenty years.
