Summary
Ivi Meleager: The Eastern Mediterranean
Wandering the winding streets of Nicosia, Margarita faces the turbulent transition of Cypriot society. The British colonizer is retreating, and the Greek and Turkish communities are increasingly estranged from each other. Torn between sadness, resentment and defiance, Margarita questions her feelings and role in the new order with her alter ego Eleni. The stream of consciousness technique involves the voices of ancient Cypriot heroes, intellectuals, folk poets, new sufferers and their executioners in the vortex of her internal struggle, while the heroine simultaneously becomes entangled in a secret love triangle. The novel sheds light on the complexity of identity, social change and love at the crossroads of past and future.
The edition contains an introductory study by literary critic Lefteris Papaleondiou, a selection from literary criticism and a chronology of the author's life and works. The novel was awarded the State Award for the novel of Cyprus.
