Goss Vladimir Peter

Summary

Vladimir P. Goss: Register of locations and monuments of early medieval art in the confluence of the Sava and Drava rivers

The area covered by the research is located between the Sava and Drava rivers, it is bordered to the east by the Danube, and to the west by the Sutla and the outer reaches of the Eastern Alps. It is the area of medieval Slavonia with Zagreb, Križevci, Virovitica, Požega and Vukovar as the main centers, and it coincides with the interriver part of the dioceses of Zagreb and Peč. Within this area, a register or a list of locations where there are monuments, both those that are fully or partially preserved and those that are known to us from written sources, old illustrations or tradition, has been compiled. In addition, the list contains locations where it is believed that monuments from the medieval era could be found. The lower limit of the period covered by the research is the second half of the 6th century, more precisely from the Avaro-Slavic settlement, and it also covers the Carolingian era (from the end of the 8th to the beginning of the 10th century), the period of ties with the Croatian national dynasty (10th and 11th centuries), and the period of the Arpadović rule (from the end of the 11th to the beginning of the 14th century). The list includes five hundred and sixty-five sites - however, since it contains not only sacred but also secular buildings and since many sites have more than one monument - the number of individual monuments included in this study is even greater.

This is a work in which the research of the early Middle Ages in northern Croatia is approached in a very special way: in the area between the rivers - where the number of preserved monuments is not large - precisely by comprehensively looking at the sites where they exist or there were monuments, the outlines of old cultural landscapes emerge, traces of the human spirit in the physical and spiritual environment that clearly speak of their time, space, creators and users.
