Frane Petrić (Cres 1529-Rome 1597) is one of the most important Croatian and
European philosophers of his time, and he was also a polyhistorian, Grecist and Latinist. The "Peripatetic
discourses" include are among his most important works, and numerous polemics in
which Petrić consistently and argumentatively defend the freedom of philosophical thought.
Through an overview of the philosophical system of the two Greek philosophers, Plato and Aristotle (agreements and disagreements) and the pre-Socratics, Petrić testified to his great erudition and excellent knowledge of the history of philosophy. The love of truth and the need to get rid of "infallible" authorities are the main motives Petrić states that he thoroughly examines the veracity of Aristotle's objections. The basic anti-Aristotelian attitude and character of Petrić's analyzes in which he tries to show how Aristotle unfairly and inappropriately attacked the ancient philosophers stems from Petrić's firm belief about Aristotle's insufficient study and ignorance of the fundamental thoughts of his predecessors, but ultimately his "hatred of the truth". Petrić's ultimate goal, and it consists in the entire renewal of philosophy, the construction of a new system of thought that would not be based on Aristotle's teaching, but on a holy, divine philosophy as recognized in the Chaldean Zoroastrian, Egyptian Hermes Trismegistus, mystical Egyptian and Plato's philosophical-theological tradition, the so-called prisca theologia
