Spon Jacob | Wheler George

Summary

The Hague 1724 One of of the earliest and most influential descriptions of travel in Dalmatia. The exceptional value of the travelogue lies in the fact that, according to its ancient wealth, culture and past, Dalmatia was placed alongside Italy and Greece for the first time on an equal footing and thus aroused the interest of the whole of Europe. According to V. Bazala ("Overview of Croatian Scientific Heritage", MH 1978) "These travelogues are important not only because they are original and accurate, but also because they describe some cities and phenomena that have not been described before. The travelogues contain excellent geographical, historical, ethnographic and architectural information. Zadar, Šibenik and Split are especially well described... and Diocletian's Palace, which we actually know from that time through these travelogues, is excellently described." Spon's travelogue was a forerunner and directly influenced Fortis, Adam and Lavallee. The book contains Spon's portrait and copper engravings of the ancient monuments of Pula, Zadar, Diocletian's Palace, etc. The book is in 2 volumes (367,405 pages), octavo format in the original. leather binding with decorations in gold print on the ribbed spine. Excellent condition

The book has an ex libris (mark of ownership) of the famous French architect Paul Louis Lagrave (1864 - 1933).
