Summary
Klaus Roth, Milena Benovska: Balkan Life Courses: Part 2: Kinship, Religion and Memory, Mobility and Identities
Historical upheavals in Southeastern Europe since the beginning of the 20th century led to deep transformations of people's daily lives and their life courses. The concept of 'life course' enables the understanding of people's lives within their socio-cultural and political context, stressors and people's everyday experience. Balkan contexts call for analyzes that bridge political and social changes and their impact on individual life courses. The works discuss issues such as family life and parenthood, age and aging, life cycle rituals and artistic expressions dedicated to them. The authors present the manifestations of social differentiation and cultural multiplicity in post-socialist or post-colonial conditions - from the development of contemporary global lifestyles among the emerging urban middle class to the ghettoization of some social or age groups. This volume focuses on the development of family cultures, on experiencing socialization and old age, on 'old' and 'new' rituals of the life cycle and their artistic representations in contemporary Southeastern Europe.
