Summary

Benedetto Croce: Literary criticism as philosophy

Bibliotteka Theoria

Selection and translation: Vladan Desnica

The book contains 28 essays by the famous Italian philosopher, historian, critic, theorist of taste, senator, minister of education Benedetto Croce. The first 14 essays refer to the theory of literature from an aesthetic and philosophical point of view, and the last 14 analyze the literary period of the 19th century and some of its representatives.

When in 1938 Vladan Desnica published translations of several essays that are the basis of this selection, Croce was probably at the height of his fame. Not only did he largely dominate Italian literary criticism and aesthetics, but he was also extremely recognized and appreciated on a global scale. His critique of empirical aesthetics and so-called positivism in the science of literature was so widely accepted that he seemed to hit on exactly what everyone agreed on. He contrasted the belief in the power of positive sciences with a new variant of speculative philosophy, which - unlike Hegel's - seemed accessible and easy to understand, so literary and artistic criticism in particular accepted it as a broader explanation, and even a philosophical foundation, of what everyone felt. And since literature and art themselves successfully fought for their own autonomy, literary critics and art theorists were largely satisfied with the elaborate defense of such a position: namely, Croce, above all, convincingly proved that art is independent and irreplaceable.
