Summary

Ralph Waldo Emerson: On Nature

The first book of essays (published in 1836) of the American philosopher and poet, an advocate of individualism, later transcendentalism, who was "regarded as a rebellious radical, a heretic and even an atheist" in his time. In eight essays: on nature, on the common good, on beauty, on language, on discipline, on idealism, on the spirit, and on possibilities, Emerson considers transcendental themes with the conviction that "personal and direct contact between the divine and the individual is possible", considering that "nothing is sacred but the integrity of one's own spirit. And the way to knowing one's own spirit, the way to understanding oneself, must be sought and found in solitude and contemplation." Added to the essays are selections from diary entries, a letter to Walt Whitman and Whitman's reply.

Nietzsche once said of Emerson that he was 'the author with the most ideas in this century'. And they were presented in a simple, penetrating and deep way. Like Goethe, Emerson looks for an answer to the question of man's place in nature and recognizes the spirit in it.

Ralph Waldo Emerson represents a turning point in American literature and culture, he is the founder of a new era and new ideas in literature, philosophy and the study of religions. He is also called the father of contemporary American literature, who strongly influenced numerous American writers, above all Walt Whitman, whose arrival he predicted in an unusual way.

He was born in 1803 in Boston, in a family with a long line of Puritan priests. He lost his father very early, but still managed to get an education at Harvard. He socialized with famous writers and philosophers, wrote poetry and essays, kept diaries and lectured in different American states from the Wild West to the big cities on the East Coast. He advocated against slavery, emphasized the transcendent nature of man and believed in man's divine origin.
