Puhvel Jaan

Summary

Jaan Puhvel: Comparative Mythology

Puhvel reflected with equal knowledge and success on both fields of Indo-European comparativism: linguistic and mythological. Among the fruits of his work in this second field, the book Comparative mythology stands out. Puhvel is a representative of the so-called "new comparative mythology" founded by his teachers, the Swede Stig Bikander and, especially, the Frenchman Georges Dumezil. Her basic premise about the "three-functional ideology" of the ancient Indo-Europeans as a reflection of the (real or ideal) three-fold division of society into the ruling, priestly, warrior, and pastoralist classes has found many (largely uncritical) adherents in the last half century, but no less numerous (not always objective) critics. Controversies as to whether the Dumezil tripartite structure can be recognized in this or that segment of some Indo-European tradition by the dust they raise have been obscured by other less controversial discoveries made in the comparative study of the mythical heritage of Indo-European peoples during the last decades. The virtue of this book is that in it, structural analyzes are dominated by purely comparative findings, which through ancestral motifs, characters and plots evoke the spiritual world of our distant ancestors in all its complexity and diversity. The author does not limit himself to recounting the achievements of Dumezil's school, but, being himself a prominent researcher in this field, gives the book his personal stamp, especially in its third part, where he deals with mythical themes, for example in the chapter about the horse and the ruler (15), and his superb linguistic skills allow him to make occasional etymological excursions, such as the one about the Balto-Slavic name of the thunder god.
