Summary
Bob Edwards, Michael Foley, Mario Diani: After Tocqueville
The debate on civil society and social capital in a comparative perspective
This collection refers to a set of questions arising as a result of Robert Putnam's provocative work on the sources of vitality of civil life in contemporary democracies. Although we have no illusions that we have offered definitive answers to these questions, we hope that with this collection we will provide readers with a theoretical and empirical basis for evaluating current theses about the role of "civil society" and "social capital" in the promotion of civic engagement and healthy democracy. At the same time, we tried to structure the collection in such a way that readers gain both a broad insight into the conditions of contemporary debate and an understanding of the most significant problems.
