Summary
Petra Babić: Croatian national - historical operas from the second half of the 19th to the end of the 20th century
All six operas dealt with in this study are intended national operas with a historical theme. This is evident from the choice of opera genre; placing the action in a turning point in history: the victory of the Croats over the Avars (Mislav), the victory over the Franks (Porin), the struggle for the survival of the national dynasty (Ban Leget), the end of independence and the entry into the state union with Hungary (Petar Svačić) and the fight against the Ottomans (Nikola Šubić Zrinjski and Milo Gojsalić) and the formation of the main hero as a pater / mater nationis. However, only two of them - Nikola Šubić Zrinjski and Porin - became operas - national symbols. The reason for this is a set of historical circumstances that led to a stronger receptivity of the audience to the messages from the opera, the appealing content of the plots and libretto, and the musical quality.
