L'elisir d'amore (The Love Potion) is an opera in two acts by the Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti. The libretto was written by Felice Romani. The opera was premiered in Milan in 1832.
The plot follows the young and in love peasant Nemorin, who is in love with the beautiful, but somewhat unattainable Adina. When he learns that Adina plans to marry Sergeant Belcore, Nemorino buys a "love potion" from the traveling doctor Dulcamara, believing that the potion will help him win Adina's love. The drink is actually an ordinary bottle of wine, but Nemorino sincerely believes in it.
The love story between Nemorino and Adina develops through a series of comical and emotional situations. The opera combines humor, love and misunderstandings, and is especially famous for Nemorino's aria "Una furtiva lagrima".
