Summary

Magda Sabo: Abigel

The main character of the novel Abigail is Gina Vitai, the spoiled daughter of a general whose father sends her to a provincial Protestant boarding school for girls in 1943 without explanation. The closed puritanical world of the institute forces Gina, accustomed to wealth and freedom, to give up many things in her life. For reasons unknown to her, Gina has to cut ties between herself and the outside world. The most mysterious institute legend revolves around a statue of a young girl in the garden, whom the girls call Abigail. Overwhelmed with a sense of belonging and loneliness, rejected by her schoolmates and unwilling to obey the institute's rules, Gina disdainfully dismisses the legend of Abigail as mere superstition. However, a mysterious benefactor appears in her life and helps anyone who writes a letter and puts it in the statue's jar. Abigail, moreover, not only solves the problems of the ward of the institute, but also undertakes serious and dangerous undertakings, such as obtaining new documents for female students of Jewish origin. Abigail, a novel that transcends the genre of youth and adventure, Magda Szabo's most beloved book in her native Hungary, is a great story about youthful innocence captured by a deadly threat, but also about illusions and reality, loyalty and betrayal, and finally - courage. Easily associated with the Harry Potter series due to its many similarities, Abigail is a work for all ages, and the possible reading perspectives and pleasures appropriate to them are many and generous.
