Summary
Walt Whitman: American Stories
Although he lived almost two centuries ago, Walt Whitman (1819-1892), "father of free verse", "pioneer of new poetry", "voice of America", i.e. "poet of the soul" and "poet of the body", as he called himself, still lives as one of the most influential and important creators in the history of American literature. He was outlived by his work, first of all, the famous collection of poems Blades of Grass, his "new Bible", in which he celebrates the individualism and spirituality of America, democracy and brotherhood among people. He was misunderstood by his contemporaries, irreducible to established frameworks, as if he wrote for the future, including our generation, because his book was declared immoral due to the free treatment of sexuality, while today everyone agrees that it is an anthology work and the author.
Although it is characterized as "rhythmic prose" and prose broken into verses, the collection Blades of Grass overshadowed Whitman's prose with its power and popularity creativity, so it is almost unbelievable that in the United States, as far as we know, a collection of all Whitman's stories like this one from The Colorful Shop has not been published so far! And these are very valuable, mostly nostalgic autobiographical works of "shorter breath", sketches about "real reality", originally published in newspapers, where the author recalls events and people from his youth. He writes them with love and understanding for all kinds of people and their appropriate and inappropriate actions, trying to reconcile differences and differences, materially and spiritually, life and death. Connoisseurs and admirers of Whitman's poetic skills will find it interesting to discover his prose side, and hunters of "dusty" literary treasures will find this neglected miniature of one of the greatest poets and poems of all time a real discovery.
