Summary
Mehmed Niyazi Ozdemir: The Battle of Plevne
A battle that was talked about decades after it took place and in which Bosniaks took a large part!
Osman Pasha, the Turkish marshal, captured the fortress of Plevne where he met the advancing Russian army. Instead of it being a routine task for the Russians, because they should have won the victory as the outnumbered side, it became the place where 38,000 of them would die. Plevna was eventually conquered, but when many expected that Marshal Osman Pasha would be killed, the Russian Emperor Alexander II Nikolayevich sent him to Istanbul with full military honors. Everyone appreciated his courage.
Osman Pasha had about 15,000 soldiers under his command, mostly Bosniaks. He served in Bosnia for about ten years, where he married Šećer Đula, who is known to many from the lyrics "Šećer Đula cried, Osman Pasha's faithful love".
