Summary
Panait Istrati: Codin
Three short stories by the Romanian-French writer talk about social injustice and the way it reflects on the individual, and they are connected by the narrator, the boy Adrian. The main character of "Night in the Swamp" is Adrian's uncle Dumitru, normally a hard-working and well-liked man who was turned by misery into a drunkard and family abuser. "Codin" is a criminal outcast from society with whom Adrian, after moving to Comorovac with his mother, forms an unusual friendship, but Codin's life begins and ends tragically. "Kir Nicola" is the story of Adriano's neighbor in the mansion, the baker Nicola, and his sick wife. The stories were written in the twenties of the last century and this is their first translation into Croatian.
