Summary
Corrado Alvaro: Man is strong
Corrado Alvaro, like many Western European intellectuals, made a pilgrimage to the Soviet Union in the thirties of the last century, in order to see for himself on the spot the realization of his eternal dream: a just society. However, he returned to Italy - under the fascist reign of terror - disappointed, aware that a new society was being born in an atmosphere of repression and suppression of individual freedom in the name of the collective. In this novel, which can be compared to the works of Franz Kafka and George Orwell in terms of its artistic reach and the chills it evokes, he presents his personal experience of a totalitarian society based on paranoia and fear. In his zeal, the new man is suspicious not only of everyone he interacts with, but also suspicious of himself, to the extent that he is ready to betray those closest to him and confess to crimes he did not commit, all in the desire to forestall the possible and certain accusations of others. Although based on the author's stay in Stalin's dictatorship, in today's era, in which all the prerequisites for complete surveillance over each of us have already been created, the novel A Man is Strong is very relevant.
