Summary
Mario Vargas Llosa: The Discreet Hero
The Discreet Hero (Spanish El héroe discreto) is a novel by Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa, which deals with the themes of honor, corruption, family and social changes in contemporary Peru in a recognizably elegant and sharp way.
At the center of the story are two seemingly ordinary people - entrepreneur Felícito Yanaqué and retired banker Ismael Carrera - who, each in his own way way, they oppose blackmail, family betrayals and the hypocrisy of society. Through their intertwined destinies, Vargas Llosa builds a witty but serious critique of moral failure and the power of quiet, principled resistance.
The novel brings a layered narrative with well-known characters from the author's earlier works, and represents a combination of tension, irony and humanity - another exceptional work of one of the greatest writers of our time.
