Summary

Salvador Dali: Diary of a Genius

"There simply couldn't be someone like me in the world, because I really wanted to be a real madman, active and organized," or "I spilled coffee on my shirt." Everyone who isn't a genius like me, meaning everyone else in the world, would delete it immediately. But I'm completely different." or "I can prove to you that I'm ready to receive $50,000 immediately, and without blinking an eye" - these are provocative thoughts collected at random from the diary entries of the self-proclaimed, but also widely recognized, genius Salvador Dali. Bjelodano has confirmed here that the eccentric artist, to put it mildly, did not suffer from an excess of modesty, on the contrary, this is a more or less known fact, and the real discovery is his "unbearable lightness" of writing and his irresistible sincerity. Dali, namely, in the manner of a racist writer, without any shame, with a wide-eyed humor and sparkling comedy, lays bare all his secrets, presenting his aesthetic, strange, philosophical and life thoughts, his pains as a painter who strives for perfection, his love for Gala, stories about unusual associations with Breton, Lorca, Bunuel... He is "surreal" gifted for describing with words almost as well as with a brush, he possesses a wealth of expressions, brings quick and lucid judgments, while his thoughts fly elusively.
But, nevertheless, this diary is above all a document about a revolutionary painter, exceptional and indispensable in the history of art, about a creative spirit of extreme sensibility, full of miracles and brilliance. Although it is sometimes difficult to decide whether to appreciate the author's honesty in immodesty or immodesty in honesty, to judge his madness or genius, lovers of art and strong emotions can passionately immerse themselves in these pages like a psychiatrist, as in the case when he says: "The only difference between a madman and me is that I am not mad."
