Summary
Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio: Elsewhere
J.M.G. Le Clézio (1940) is a famous and prolific writer and the last French Nobel laureate. He is undoubtedly the most interesting name in modern French literature. His works summarize all appearances, all bright and dark points of our civilization. It has hardly been translated in Croatia. Until the awarding of the Nobel Prize to that writer, only our house published the book of stories Mondo and other stories, translated by Zlatko Crnković. It is difficult to determine the reasons why his work was not attractive to Croatian publishers. In any case, it will take a lot of time and effort to translate at least his main works and publish them in our country. Until then, it seems salutary to recommend this book Elsewhere, because this book presents the life and work of J.M.G. in a very accessible, exhaustive and comprehensive way. Le Clézio.
In the book Elsewhere, Le Clézio, through a conversation with the distinguished French journalist Jean-Louis Ezine, speaks directly and openly about his life and his life experiences. There we learn details about the motives and manner of his writing, but also about the big problems of today's world, which is fighting for a better, happier and healthier life.
"Contrary to Valéry's opinion (We, in our civilization, know that we are mortal.), Western society completely forgets and ignores that it is mortal. It does not want to think about its death. It is afraid of its death. And precisely because of this fear, Western society exposes itself to the danger of disappearing without a trace" - says the writer. However, the most impressive part of the book relates to Le Clézio's experiences in Mexico, a country where he spends six months every year. The writer has his house there, at the foot of a volcano. Living there for years, he got to know the soul of an ordinary Mexican man who lives simply, without fuss and without major life demands. It is interesting, the writer states, how Mexicans usually communicate with others through silence: there... silence is not the absence of words, but it is another way of expression. (...) When Mexicans are silent, it means they have something very important to say.
