Summary

Ćamil Sijarić: A tree near the akova

Ćamil Sijarić is one of the most important South Slavic writers of the twentieth century. He wrote novels, travelogues, poems, and according to many, he reached his peak precisely by writing short stories. The tree near Akov brings an anthological selection of Sijarić's short stories.
Storyteller, novelist, poet. He finished primary school in Godijevo, and then attended King Alexander's Great Madrasah in Skopje. He finished high school in Vranje, and graduated in law in Belgrade. During World War II, he worked as a court clerk in Sarajevo, Mostar, Bosanska Gradiška and Banja Luka, and towards the end of the war he went to partisan territory and was a TANJUG correspondent. From 1947 he lived in Sarajevo, where he worked in the literary editorial office of Radio-Sarajevo until the end of his working life. He died in a traffic accident in Sarajevo in 1989. As a high school student in Skopje, Sijarić started writing poems, which were published in books only in 1988 (Lyrics) and 1990 (Koliba na nebu). However, his sumptuous artistic gift was above all narrative, and it was realized in the most complete way in numerous stories and novels with themes from his native Sandžak and from Balkan history. ]amil Sijarić published the novels Bihorci (1955), Battle of Mojkovac (1968), Konak (1971), Tsarska vojska (1976), Raška zemlja Rascia (1979), and short story collections Ram Bulja (1953), Green ring on the water (1957), Naša snaha i mi boys (1962), Sablja (1969), Na putu putnici (1970), When a girl sleeps, that is as if they smell like apples (1973), French cotton (1980), Tales by the Water (1982), Tales (1985), Roman Ring (1985), Tales (1987), Tree by the Akov (1990).
