Summary

Daniel Kehlmann: F

"Then listen. This is an order you will follow because you want to follow it, and you want it because I order you, and I order you because you want me to order you. From today you will try. At any cost!"

When he took his three sons to a performance by the Great Lindemann that afternoon and agreed to assist the hypnotist on stage, the skeptical and the unambitious writer Arthur Friedland had no idea that the very same evening he would empty the family bank account, take his passport and disappear - for 24 years.

Now, when their paths meet again, Arthur is a literary star of dark brilliance, and his adult sons are men who are each going through their own crisis: Martin is a priest without faith, Iwan is a painter without talent, and his twin Eric is an unscrupulous businessman whose universe collapses in 2008, threatening to suck him in.

While for Daniel Kehlmann they question the holy trinity of modern man's religion – money, art and God – each of the heroes of the novel F is some kind of fraud, but at the same time each one leads us one step closer to what could easily be the truth.

Family, love and (un)happiness, life and the magic that rules it, all that it is contained in a novel of wild wit and philosophical depth, in a masterpiece that – to paraphrase the Great Lindemann – you must read because you want to, make an effort, at any cost. Because, it will come back to you.

"Kehlmann is one of the most brilliant and witty writers, and he became this by exploring the most important philosophical and intellectual topics."
– Jeffrey Eugenides

"It can't be easy to write a comic novel about the death of God, and yet Daniel Kehlmann seems to have managed it... The world is big and unknowable, life is short, and memory is sadly limited... but it's hard to describe how fun it all can be. But laughter is most precious when we're in the dark."
Guardian

"A complex, beautiful novel with many faces: family saga, fairy tale and dizzying farce...Daniel Kehlmann is one of the greatest novelists today because he manages to make big themes seem easy."
– Adam Thirlwell

F is a toy with the thoughts of fate and predestination, truth and falsehood, original and counterfeit, written elegantly and stunningly fluffy.”
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
