Summary

Knut Hamsun: Hunger

Although published in 1890, Knut Hamsun's first novel Hunger is often cited as a literary introduction to the 20th century and an exceptional example of "modern psychological literature". It was a literary sensation when it was released: the content was a kind of shock for the readers of the time, and the innovation was a real nightmare for the writers of the time! In his version of "Portrait of the Artist in his Youth", Hamsun describes how, as a young man, he tried to make his way as a writer in Kristiania (now Oslo); how he alone, without permanent employment and income, without friends and anyone's help, struggled with unimaginable hunger and poverty. The "artistically shaped" life situations of the unnamed main character are mostly autobiographical, and it is incredible what he lived through and what horrors he went through, almost reaching the brink of self-destruction, and it is even more incredible with what stoic peace, without protest - admittedly, he unsuccessfully turned to God a couple of times - he went through it all. The author himself described his masterpiece as a "mysterious game of nerves in a body tortured by hunger", but between the lines there are still countless beauties, refined thoughts, subtle analyses... just to be enjoyed.
Let's also remember that Hamsun received the more than deserved Nobel Prize only in 1924, after the publication of Blessings of the Land (also published by the Colorful Store), and after reading Hunger, we can wonder, and it's hard to explain, why he didn't receive it. received a few decades earlier... But let's not delay: before you is one of the best works of one of the best writers of the 19th and 20th centuries! What more is needed? Literary connoisseurs, chorus!
