Summary

Ivan Gundulić: Ljubovnik ramescgliv

Gljubovnik ramescgliv by Mr. Givo Fran Gundulić, lord of Dubrovnik

From the love lyrics only the song Ljubovnik sramescgliv has been preserved, a cover-rework of the song Amante timido by the Italian poet and Gundulić's contemporary G. Pretija. Nine shorter poems found in the oldest surviving manuscript of Osman, transcribed by N. Ohmučević, cannot be said with absolute certainty to be Gundulić's. Even for the gravestone poem U smrt Marija Kalandrica, it is not known for sure whether it is his.

Gundulić, Ivan (Dživo; nickname: Mačica), Croatian writer (Dubrovnik, January 9, 1589 – Dubrovnik, XII. 8, 1638). He was educated in Dubrovnik, and his teachers were the Latin poet and translator Petar Palikuća and the Italian Camillo Camilli. Year In 1608, he became a member of the Great Council and since then performed many duties in the administration of the Republic. Twice he was a prince in Konavle. Year In 1634, he was elected a member of the Council of Petitioners (Senate), and on 11 IX. 1638 as a member of the Small Council for the following year, but death prevented him from becoming so. He was never the Prince of the Republic because he did not live to be 50 years old. Deeply religious, contemplative and preoccupied with concerns for the future of his city - the Republic, he spent his life in his hometown, in an era characterized by the spirit of the Catholic Counter-Reformation.
