Summary
Stanislav Vinaver: The lightning rod of the universe
The lightning rod of the universe was published as the second book of the Albatros library, which Vinaver, together with Todor Manojlović, designed and edited with the intention of opening new views and vistas to the Yugoslav readership. If Crnjan's Diary about Čarnojević is a publication of a generation defeated by the war, and Rastkov's Burlesque about Mr. Perun, the god of thunder, is an explosion of unbridled encyclopedic research through the experience of the human race - Lightning Shield of the Universe represents a scattered dialectic of a new literary age and time, witnessed in a series of hybrid literary forms gathered under the same cover. Allegories and fantastic scenes, manifesto declarations and polemical sharp attitudes, travelogue passages, musical escapades, essayistic reflections on art and prose medallions arranged in the cover of this book not only hint at, but sometimes also achieve the highest aesthetic ranges within Serbian avant-garde narrative prose, as well as in terms of genre interweaving, stylistic and linguistic play, and essayistic reflection. Lightning rod of the universe is perhaps the best written programmatic and artistic book of the Serbian avant-garde, which does not want to be exclusively a pamphlet, manifesto, art or indicator of artistic and poetic possibilities - but all together and at once.
