Hermann Hesse was born on July 2, 1877, and died on August 9, 1962. He was a German writer, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946. He wrote lyrical poems, short stories and novels. At the beginning of his work, he was a romantic, in his prose works influenced by psychoanalysis and Eastern wisdom. Hesse's works clearly show his interest in existential, spiritual and mystical themes and the great influence of Buddhist and Hindu philosophy. His most famous works are Steppenwolf, Siddhartha, The Glass Bead Game. He was born in Calvo, Württemberg, in 1877. In 1922 he emigrated to Switzerland, in 1923 he became a Swiss citizen. As an anti-militarist and pacifist, he strongly opposed the First World War. He expressed his feelings about the war in many of his books. During World War II, he found himself in strange circumstances. The German propagandist Joseph Goebbels initially supported his books, and as a result Hesse was able to publish his works. But when he demanded that certain parts of his novel Narziss und Goldmund (Narziss und Goldmund) concerning the pogroms remain intact, he found himself on the Nazi blacklist. However, he managed to avoid the Second World War and settled in Switzerland.

Like many of his characters, Hesse had many problems with women throughout his life. His first marriage with Maria Bernoulli, with whom he had three children, ended tragically, and his wife became mentally ill. His second marriage to singer Ruth Wenger was short-lived, and they spent most of their time apart from each other. This led to a deep emotional crisis, Hesse withdrew into himself and avoided social contact, which he described in his famous novel Steppe Wolf. However, his third marriage with Ninon Dolbin Auslender (1895 - 1966) lasted until the end of his life. He mentioned his third wife in the book Journey to the East. Hesse developed a certain amount of conservatism in his later life. In The Glass Bead Game, one of the characters declares all music after Johann Sebastian Bach artificial and bad, naming Ludwig van Beethoven as an extreme example of bad musical taste. By the way, The Glass Bead Game, with its idealized medieval style, was an extremely popular book in war-torn Germany in 1945.

Hesse died in his sleep in Montagnola on August 9, 1962 at the age of 85.
