Summary
Ernst Toller: Hinkemann: Tragedy in Three Acts
Toller's last prison drama departs in terms of motive, style and idea from his previous dramatic texts. It is no longer a "drama station" that from episode to episode intensifies the emergence and effort of the New Man to show the world possible ways of emotional and moral deliverance. The former heroism and marked figure of the new age is opposed here by his grotesque counterpart: Hinkemann is a war cripple, a subject of physical and emotional suffering, a measure of despair and hopelessness. The new era of post-war reality has only brought with it the impossibility of healthy interpersonal relations, the impossibility of consistent and sincere love between people, the absence of solidarity and a slow path to the bottom of life - the world expects an anxious, disturbing and bitter future.
