Igor Mandić: Emergency Service

"Emergency Service" is a collection of polemical essays and columns by prominent Croatian writer, critic and journalist Igor Mandić. The book was published in 2005. It contains texts that Mandić originally published in the daily newspaper Vjesnik in the period from 1999 to 2005 under the column of the same name. In the texts, the author deals with "the clarification of many ambiguities in the Croatian wilderness of the past and this millennium", critically analyzing social, political and cultural phenomena in Croatia. Mandić's recognizable style is characterized by openness, sharp polemics, erudition and uncompromising criticism. Igor Mandić (Šibenik, 1939 – Zagreb, 2022) was a prominent Croatian literary critic, essayist, columnist and one of the most famous polemicists in this region. His work covers a wide range of topics, from literary and musical criticism to socio-cultural analyzes and research into everyday life. He graduated in comparative literature at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb in 1963. He spent most of his career at the newspaper Vjesnik, where he worked as a critic, columnist and editor, and in 2000 he was briefly the editor-in-chief of the paper. He was known for his sharp language, uncompromising views and readiness for controversy. He often broke taboos, writing about topics such as sexuality, death and nationalism. In 2005, he received the award of the Croatian Journalists' Association for his lifetime achievement.
