Summary

Josip Horvat: Croatian Panopticon

In the extensive and rich literary, journalistic and journalistic oeuvre of Josip Horvat, a book of historical portraits entitled Croatian Panopticon occupies a special place. It describes - often with many completely unknown details - the life paths of the following authors: Hugo Mihalovich, Vinko Krišković, Vladimir Lunaček, Milivoj Dežman and Milan Šufflay. This book was first published in Zagreb, published by NIP Tstvalnost in 1965, and published by NZ Globus for the second time in 1985. In the afterword to the first edition, Horvat himself admits that "the people brought to life on these pages are neither great nor heroes, nor celebrated. They were not great men who shape their own and subsequent generations with their ideas and actions. They were not heroes who, through personal sacrifice, for the greater good of the community set a moral example for generations. Even less were they celebrities. who fascinate the world at the moment with some virtuosity, and tomorrow they will be forgotten. They only performed in Croatian public life, in smaller or larger roles, and then disappeared." Horvat introduced a multitude of details into his Panopticon, often important and broader, and not only for determining individual features of the individuals portrayed. He obviously wrote it with his heart and in one breath. In his rich oeuvre, which extends from Lijepa naše... and 1848 to Culture of the Croats and History of Croatian Journalism and many other valuable publications, we will surely find a few more books that definitely deserve a new edition - for a new generation of readers.
