Summary
Aleksandar Blok: Selected Poems
Aleksandar Blok, a key figure of Russian symbolism, bridged the gap between the mystical and the real, the heavenly and the earthly, with his creativity. His creative journey, which began under the influence of Russian romanticism and the philosophy of Vladimir Solovyov, was bounded, on the one hand, by the ideal of Eternal Femininity and the Wonderful Lady, and on the other hand by the estranged and enigmatic Unknown, a symbol of harsh urban everyday life. Over time, Blok's lyrics deepened and were directed towards the fate of his own country, showing its historical burden, social conflicts and melancholic beauty, so that the climax and sealing of his oeuvre came with prophetic visions of revolutionary chaos and transformation. This chronologically based selection provides a clear insight into that poetic arc, but also into a deeper poetic break that occurs in a mature creative phase. Poems, such as "Dvanaest" and "Kosa", show Blok as a poet who not only wrote down his personal quests, but through them hinted and described the collective fate of the entire nation.
