Ranko Matasović: THE STONE OF THE KINGS - MEDIEVAL IRISH SAGAS
Along with Greek and Roman, the ancient Irish literary tradition belongs to the oldest European literature. Despite this, it is an almost unknown concept to Croatian readers and literary experts. The book Kamen vrtova by Ranko Matasović (1968), Indo-Europeanist and philologist of world reputation, is in this sense a pioneering work and an important date of Croatian Celtic studies. Because, not only is ancient Irish literature presented in one place for the first time with a selection of its best material (twenty sagas) and an extensive study of the main characteristics of its language, style and content, but the origin and development of that literature is presented to the reader in the wider context of the complex development and organization of Irish early medieval civilization, culture and society. Created as the result of many years of leading a seminar on the Old Irish language at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, Matasović's book is primarily characterized by the fulfillment of a philological ideal that aspires to philology as the art of slow reading.
