Markus Zusak is an award-winning Australian writer born in 1975 in Sydney to a family of immigrants from Austria and Germany. He started writing in high school, and in 1999 he published his debut novel The Underdog, the first part of a trilogy for young people about the brothers from the working-class Wolfe family.
The sequels to the trilogy followed: Fighting Ruben Wolfe and When Dogs Cry, and the saga inspired by the growing up of the author and his brother won over readers and critics. Critical praise, as well as awards, followed the author's fourth novel, the story of an underage taxi driver, Ja sam glasnik.
But Kradljivica knjiga (2005) brought him world fame. Shortly after its publication, the novel became a bestseller, translated all over the world. The Book Thief, greeted with unanimous critical acclaim, spent more than a decade on the New York Times bestseller list alone. In 2013, the novel was made into a film produced by Twentieth Century Fox, starring Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson and Sophie Nélisse.
In 2018, after a thirteen-year hiatus, Markus Zusak published his sixth novel Bridge of Clay.
