Summary
Jan Terlouw: King of Katorija
Translated from Dutch by Radovan Lučić
Seventeen-year-old Stah dreams of becoming king of Katorija. The good old king died seventeen years ago, and the heir still hasn't been found. The six ministers who - temporarily - govern the country, give Staho seven tasks. If Stah manages to complete all the tasks, he will become the new king of Katoria. But are the ministers actually looking for a new king?
The King of Katorije is considered the best Dutch children's book of the 20th century and was made into a screen in 2012 in a Dutch-Italian co-production.
Jan Terlouw, born on November 15, 1931, worked in his profession as an atomic physicist until he decided to actively engage in politics in 1970. As a member of the social-liberal party "Democrats 66" (D66), he became a member of parliament, and among other things held the positions of Minister of Economy, Deputy Prime Minister and Queen's Commissioner. He began his writing career by writing down the stories he told his children every night before going to bed, at the urging of his wife. His involvement in politics is also recognized in his literary work, which subtly advocates democracy, freedom of speech, liberalism and anti-extremism. His heroes are inventive young people who approach these topics in an original way and conclude that critical thinking is the most important.
