Summary
Peter Handke: A Short Letter for a Long Farewell
Looking for his wife Judith, the nameless hero of the novel, a young Austrian in America, arrives at a hotel in Providence, where a letter awaits him at the door: "I am in New York. At the same time, please do not look for me, it would do you no good to find me." Over time, however, it becomes clear that Judith is actually pursuing him with the intention of killing him. He spends the day in New York and then goes to Philadelphia, where he will be joined by an old love with a two-year-old daughter. Together they drive to St. Louis, and then, in order to escape from the merciless Judith, heads west to Tucson, and from there to Oregon. On the coast of the Pacific Ocean, he will meet his wife with a gun in her hand.
