Summary
Ed McBain: Ice
From the book:
... Her house was in the middle of the road between two avenues. At this time, shops were closed, shutters down and in the dark. She passed under a street lamp two houses from her building; she was approaching her house when a man stepped out from under the darkened door of the side entrance.
Her head was still bent because of the snow hitting her eyes; at first, she only felt his presence. She stopped. He was holding a gun in his hand. She suddenly felt horror. She opened her mouth to scream, or to beg, or to call for help, but the gun went off and she felt it burn under her left breast, and then she fell backwards onto the pavement, into the snow, blood gushing from her wound, soaking her gray officer's coat.
He was standing over her.
He looked back for a moment, glancing over his shoulder.
He aimed at head level and fired two bullets straight into the face.
