Summary
Paul Margueritte: The Lovers
A novel of forbidden love by Paul Margueritte. The married Prince Daniel d'Ancise engages in a sinful relationship with the sickly Danish beauty Frederika, who is convalescing in Algeria. All the ardor of the African sun and burning love passion is described with the naturalistic power of an excellent writer. The poor lover has no idea what abyss she is falling into and how tragically her love spell will end. The attitude of the prince's pious wife for the entire duration of her husband's frenzy is shown with so much angelic peace and belief in divine providence and justice that a similar female type will rarely be found anywhere in world literature. In every respect, this book - after Urban's "Living Whip", Kastner's "Fabian", Munthe's "San Michel" and Olbracht's "Nikole Šuhaja" - is an excellent change in the multifaceted program of this library. The book is decorated with illustrations based on watercolors by the French painter G. Conrad.
