The short but powerful novel The People of Aspromonto was well received by both readers and critics. It is considered one of the classic works of Italian literature of the 20th century. It is a story about the rebellion of the oppressed and the struggle for survival in the harsh conditions of life in Calabria. Corrado Alvaro (1896-1956), Italian writer and journalist, recognizable for his veristic description of the life of the oppressed inhabitants of southern Italy; describes the differences and tensions between the rich, urbanized northern Italy and the rural, poor south. Because of his opposition to fascism, he was forced to leave Italy. An opponent of all totalitarianism and an advocate of individual freedom, in his works he is preoccupied with ethical issues and advocates social changes in favor of the disenfranchised. He is the winner of numerous literary awards and one of the most important Italian writers of the first half of the 20th century.
