Prilepin Zahar

Summary

Zahar Prilepin: Manastir

The novel Manastir tells about a unique monastery, where monks once lived ascetically, but which the Soviet government turned into a camp. This prison zone is not only separated from the rest of the world by barbed wire, but also by the White Sea, an icy wasteland, a swamp and an impassable taiga... The cells of the remaining monks stand next to the camp barracks, the library and the theater are next to the cell and the dungeon. Cultural and creative activities are intertwined with hard physical work every day. In that Soviet laboratory, the new warden of the camp, Fyodor Ivanovich Eichmanis (a historical figure), an undoubtedly educated and intelligent, but also ruthless man, is trying to conduct an experiment in which the Soviet man should be re-educated. In the history of the camp and in the vast literary production on the subject, Prilepin's novel Manastir will certainly occupy one of the leading positions.

"No one wanted to stay on the shore together with the corporal: Sivcev, Afanasyev, Moisej Solomonovich entered one after the other. Kepec walked along the shore and repeated the whole time: 'As long as he has a butt—there will be guilt!'—and then he also stepped into the water."

Zahar Prilepin (1975) is a contemporary Russian writer who has gained exceptional popularity both in Russia and in the West. His books (Patologie, Sanjka, Grijeh, Manastir) have received numerous Russian (Ruski Booker, National Bestseller, Boljšaja knjiga) and foreign awards (Ivo Andrić, Literature dal fronte). Although a controversial socio-political figure, Prilepin has been translated into many foreign languages.
