Summary
Silvia Moreno-García: The Mexican Horror Novel
A mesmerizing feminist version of the horror novel. In Mexico in the fifties of the 20th century, a young member of high society discovers the creepy secrets of a beautiful old villa.
After receiving a letter from her cousin written in a frenzy, Noemí Taboada goes to her in the Curia, an isolated villa in a Mexican province. She is not sure what she will find there - her cousin's husband, a handsome Englishman, is a complete stranger, and Noemí knows almost nothing about the region.
Noemí is not a classic heroine. She is a glamorous member of high society, and her chic dresses and perfect red lipstick are appropriate for cocktail parties, not amateur espionage. But Noemí is strong and smart, and she is not afraid: neither her cousin's new husband, who is both terrifying and attractive, nor his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by her, and not even the fairy herself, who begins to enter Noemí's dreams with visions of blood, lust and doom.
Her only ally in this inhospitable home is the shy and gentle youngest member of the family, Francis. Everything points to the fact that he wants to help her, but also that he keeps silent about the disturbed stories about his family's past. Because the Curia hides countless secrets. Once immeasurable wealth protected the mansion from prying eyes, but, digging deeper, Noemí brings to light morbid stories of violence and madness.
However, enchanted by the creepy and seductive world of the Curia, she soon finds no way out of it herself.
