Summary
George Pelecanos: Miki, one dog
The well-known Hollywood screenwriter and writer of crime novels Pelecanos deals with the story of a life journey - from the perspective of a dog that changes owners and wanders the streets of the American capital, Washington, just as the playful and good-natured boxer Miki would tell it. A strong and proud dog, he spends his early days with a caring family in a social housing complex in Washington. Then he is suddenly taken away by a thug and an alcoholic, who pushes Miki into a rough struggle for survival. Throughout his life, he will experience homelessness, tragedy, harrowing stints in a shelter, and good deeds, including an episode with old Uncle Joe who adopted him in the midst of mourning his wife's death. In the main plot of this short novel, Miki lives with a young marijuana dealer, Top, who runs a profitable but very dangerous business in the city. Along the way, Miki makes friends with other dogs and witnesses the best and worst sides of humans, as well as human virtues and flaws. As the seasons come and go, he begins to understand the finitude of existence and in turn learns to appreciate the gift of life.
