Orwell George

Summary

George Orwell: Don't give up, aspidistra

Gordon was in some kind of quarrel with the aspidistra. Several times he stealthily wanted to kill her - not watering her, pressing hot cigarette ends against her stem, and even sprinkling salt on the soil in the pot. But these devil plants are practically immortal. In almost any conditions, they can somehow languidly, sickly keep themselves alive... Aspidistra, that English ornamental plant! It should be on our coat of arms instead of a lion and a unicorn. As long as there are aspidistras on the windows, there won't be a revolution in England... The aspidistra is the tree of life, suddenly it bursts before Gordon's eyes!" The above quotes from the novel Don't give up, aspidistro (1936) show a more casual intonation than most of Orwell's literary work, in the good tradition of British humor. The original title Keep the Aspidistra Flying is an ironic paraphrase of the slogan Keep the flag flying, which affirms loyalty to a group or country. Orwell uses it sarcastically, so the (anti)hero of the novel, Gordon Comstock, promises the girl: "However, I think we will settle down quite nicely." To have my own house, a pram and an aspidistra.'' Gordon is a misunderstood and unfulfilled poet, employed in a peripheral bookstore, paid little, but this job still suits him because it is not too demanding and leaves him time to write poems. He has a hard time making ends meet, but he doesn't accept help from a rich friend; torn between pride and prejudice, reason and feeling, necessity and freedom, duty and art, Gordon simply does not know what to do. He would like to be a larpurartist, but let us also joke: the paper is still frowning, and the stomach is rumbling... In short: Aspidistra is the least pretentious and most subtle of Orwell's books, but nevertheless it hits directly at the heart of the matter. And that's exactly why: Don't give up, aspidistra!
